The headphones fit snugly onto the head, and completely cover the ears, pressing on the skin surround the ears - NOT on the ears themselves - which hurts badly after just a short while! If you do need to uncover one ear, this is possible as the design is still quite secure, sitting just behind the ear. Many people don't actually need the isolation these headphones give you for every song - just the louder ones!

They are also very useful for keeping sounds in - here the possibilities are endless. If you want loud sound into your ears but with hardly anything leaking into the room - these are the ones for you.

The key is isolation - keeping loud sounds in the room out of your ears, and/or keeping the headphone sound contained. recording studios will also find these handy for exactly that feature - vocalists can have loud foldback to sing to, without the vocal mic picking it up.
